Unless there is another referendum question put to the British people or at the very least a General Election to decide on final terms for leaving the EU, the UK can no longer claim to be a Democracy.

In 1907 Five Canadian women filed a petition to ask the Supreme Court of Canada, “Does the word ‘Persons’ in Section 24 of the British North America Act, 1867, include female persons,” to which the court eventually replied that it does not.

Feeling Old

Yep I am., plus feeling generally wretched. And to really rub it in another bloody election and more chances for bloody Politicians to get their mugs on the telly.

Will it ever fucking end? The Politicians lie about Brexit, the man (and woman) in the street suck it up like nectar and believe we can just stop paying our subscription, and hand it to the NHS instead.

Well back to feeling old….I find that the year I was born, these other facts were also valid:-

King George V1 was our Monarch

Clement Attlee was Prime Minister

Harry Truman was US President

Joseph Bastard Stalin was Dictator of the Soviet Union

Francisco Shit Head Franco was ditto of Spain

Charles De Gaulle was a provisional President of France

Germany and Japan was occupied by the Allies

Archibald Wavell was Viceroy and Governor of India

Heathrow had it’s first International Flight

UN Security Council had it’s first meeting.

That’s why I’m feeling old and to add salt I remembered that my father was born in 1896 !!!! Mind you he did marry late in life.

5th November 2016: A High Court Judgement passed in the last week means that Parliament (MP’s) can now become involved in the Article 50 issue, since it is likely that the Government will need to pass a Law to enact Article 50.

The Government have appealed the judgement of the three High Court Judges, ie it will be heard again by all eleven High Court Judges in the Supreme Court.

This first ruling was given by three powerful Judges, the Lord Chief Justice, the Master of the Rolls, and a judge from the Court of Appeal. Opinions differ of course and although the marker set down by these three looks solid, anything can happen.

Members of Parliament and Lords can now give directions to the Government.

The debate needs to be widened and it now will be. Also remember that a law passed by parliament can be amended.

24th August 2016: Listening to Owen Smith debate with John Humphreys on BBC Radio 4 this morning was a sobering experience.

Owen Smith wants the EU final negotiation results to be put to the Country and Parliament.

Humphreys went for him hammer and tong….a thing he often does and I admire him for it, but this time I detected a bit of anger a bit of something else….maybe a touch of his Brexit soul….maybe I’m wrong.

However I support Owen Smith in his stance on the referendum and the Governments determination to force a Brexit at all costs.

Humphreys battered him with Democracy and likened Smith’s stance to re-running Parliamentary Elections every time the result doesn’t suit someone.

That is a bogus argument of course….Parliamentary Elections are for a few years only and misbehaving governments can be kicked out at any time.

What is facing the country is the unknown, the last referendum result on Europe lasted for around 40 years, and so may this. In a changing world you need to get these things right and information based on red bus slogans is simply not enough.

This Brexit is not like anything the UK has done before, we don’t know the outcome (there are many, many surprises around the corner), this government may start negotiations and not finish them, etc etc.

Many Brexit voters are muttering about being mislead…..this must now be put right….because another 40 years on the end of a bad decision could be disastrous.

Let’s negotiate the best deal we can and put all that information to the British people and Parliament to accept or reject.

24th June 2016 – Britain chose Leave and defeated the Remain camp by 52% to 48% in the referendum yesterday, with the results being announced this morning.

It was Human Instinct vs Common Sense and the animal instinct won.

The rhetoric from Nigel Farage in grossly divisive this morning “a victory for decent people”, what the hell does that mean? The other 48% are indecent?

His view of Britain is not that of decent people and there lies the trap the 58% have fallen for.

Farage says it is “Independence Day”, the problem is he has won Independence from our biggest trading partner. We stand or fall on our trading results….how is that any victory.

The younger generation have been let down badly by this vote and there futures have been sold cheaply on instinct alone. This is not a General Election where if you make a voting mistake it can be put right five years down the line. We are stuck with this idiocy and those who could not cast a vote yesterday will probably pay for it during their working lives.

Not a thing to do in the modern world, we have so much in common with our neighbours it defies belief that this generation should make such a momentous decision without knowing the consequences.

The Treaty of Lisbon allows two years to negotiate an exit and this can be extended as each EU member has to debate and pass the negotiations. It took Greenland three years and that was a very uncomplicated case.  Today marks the start of years of uncertainty and disruption and no one can foretell the outcome. What a prospect for us and all of Europe.

But they may also stick to the two years and say “enough is enough, take it or leave it”.

As we step into the unknown with a deeply divided Nation, let us hope this is not the break-up of the EU beginning, which is a force for good and a staunch supporter of peace.

We have left it behind and risked a dismantling of the UK.
